Know the POWER of your Golf Tournament.
For those of us in the Events & Fundraising business, we all have a case of the “don’t ever see how sausages are made” syndrome. Events are very hard work – and we are the ones who do it. Not a recipe for romantic interpretations when we all live this every day!!
I am writing this on Friday November 15, 2024.
Taylor Swift kicked off her 6-gig visit to Toronto last night.
Mike Tyson & Jake Paul will go at it tonight.
This week in golf we saw Rory talking loudly about pay-for-players against a backdrop of $750 daily ticket prices for the 2025 Ryder Cup.
And there’s just enough attention on BC Place this Sunday to remind us that you don’t need to be a fan of the CFL to find a reason to have a fun Grey Cup party.
Events. Everyone loves Events.
Is it an emotional reaction to the COVID lockdown that we are remembering we still need to share in-person moments with others? Is it the inevitable reaction to the smaller scroll-and-swipe lives we all live with our phones instead of with other people? Is it that in a world of streaming services and social media where we control how & when we consume entertainment that it’s such a treat to have a defined timeline to experience things together as a group? Yes, yes, yes and yes to many more reasons.
KNOW YOUR VALUE. Remember how much they want what we are doing. There is a reason why we can buy a certain phone for $225 while the Apple iPhone is $1,600 – and we buy the iPhone. Why? Cuz we want it. It’s that simple. And Apple knows it. They KNOW it.
It’s time for all of us to remember to KNOW it more when it comes to planning your golf tournaments for next season. We know our participants or sponsor partners aren't going to call us to ask if we wouldn't mind raising registration fees and sponsor package prices! And we also know that any price increase will be met with some moans & groans and laments about industry struggles or economic bad timing. We could all probably write that script for them. But we have to KNOW our value and remember to flex our muscles when appropriate.
