This is the week that forces all of us in the tournament business to remember that the people who gather with us on tournament day have really got that "other" side to them.
Note - for those readers who aren't entirely sure why this whole MASTERS thing gets all the golfers so worked up, here's a cheat sheet for you. Did You Know?
We know them as friends and as supporters and as committee members and as corporate sponsors and all those various terms. Of course those are terms used to describe them in their real lives!! This week reminds us that they are also "golfers". They are very much golfers at heart, and that heart is worn on their sleeves during the Masters.
It is super fun watching all the SVP and C-Suite people in our respective lives turn into excitable little kids again as the photos of Magnolia Lane begin to reappear.
I love it because this week is the unofficial start to the golf season in the North. And I love it because it reminds us we can plan for the upcoming season with an eye toward remembering that we can deal with all these people as "golfers" also.
We rarely see the excited "golfer" side of all the people who orbit inside our tournament environment. But it's there!! They get to pull the curtains back this week but it's there all 52 weeks of the year and we need to tug at that string much more often.

Golf lets these busy, important people be a kid again every once in a while and that will be on display all week leading up the final putt Sunday. This also happens out on the course on your tournament day. The high-fives and whoop-whoops and silly team inside jokes allow for those sweet moments they rarely get in their respective busy lives. Golf is awesome for that!
So bake this into your recipe and include it into all levels of planning and decision-making for your tournament day because you make so many decisions for 144 people at a time. You are planning a "group" day but the reality is that the majority of their individual experience that day will be with just 3 other people playing golf together for 5 hours. And THAT is the environment that truly represents golf, to these golfers.
So force yourself to make a few less "tournament" decisions and a few more "golfer" decisions because it'll feed the all-important golfer-side of our supporters and that is a very healthy thing for the long term of your event.

Golf is at the center of the action this week, and golf is the center of your tournament day too, so it is always wise to lean into it as much as possible.
This is why we specialize in the golf side of the event world. We are the experts to point you in those "GOLFY" directions!
